Studio[]Christchurch invites you to participate in an Architectural Augmented Reality Competition supporting the earthquake shattered City Centre of Christchurch New Zealand. CityUps+ is a call for global digital contributions to expand the live architecture event CityUps as the headline event of the Festival of Transitional Architecture (FESTA) on 25 October 2014.

'The future will be live' is the title for this year's FESTA, which runs from the 24th to 27th October 2014. CityUps is the headline event of this year’s festival and takes place on the 25th of October. Its purpose is to rebuild High Street, the city's former central shopping street, for one very special night.

On September 2010 and February 2011 New Zealand's second largest city, Christchurch, was shaken by a series of devastating earthquakes, which left 80% of the central city destroyed. The rebuild is only just beginning to stir, now that the debris has been cleared.

CityUps will bring together architecture students from around New Zealand to present their vision for the future of Christchurch in the form of 1:1 urban scale architectural installations. It will also include digital installations from around the world! CityUps builds on Studio[]Christchurch’s LUXCITY event at FESTA 2012, which brought over 20,000 people back into the vacant city centre.

CityUps+ is an augmented reality competition that aims to provide a platform for global digital contributions in the Christchurch rebuild. We encourage entries to be quick-fire yet thoughtful, using no more than 10000 facets from any CAD package. You are invited to set a scene for an augmented reality in which thousands of people will play in the vibrant and invigorated streetscape of the festival. The designs will be made visible on site by using the smartphone App CityView AR developed by HIT Lab NZ. The best 3 submissions will receive an “Avatar for a Night” and through their AR google glasses you will be able to hang out with New Zealand students and the people of Christchurch.

As an ongoing record of the design contributions and to inspire your efforts, a point cloud of High Street can be viewed online (if you are running the latest version of Chrome).  As work is accepted the cloud will grow and on October 25th the city will light up with 1000’s of phones viewing a crowd-sourced architecture like no other.

Submission Requirements

This is not a typical digital competition as participants are submitting a digital 3D model. Multiple submissions are encouraged. Due to the limitations of our virtual reality application, submissions will need to abide by these technical constraints.

Each project submission must contain one object and one image file. Multiple entries are encouraged but each one must be submitted separately.

Prize

Three successful applicants will be given the experience of attending CityUps event on the 25th of October in Christchurch through their own virtual surrogate. The winners will be able to see and hear the event through a surrogate who will be wearing google glasses. The winner will direct the surrogate through the space with voice commands.

FAQ

One 3D mesh model with less than 10,000 triangles, give or take. This is equivalent to a 2.5MB size file. The model must be exported as an OBJ file format. The file must be named with your first and last name. For example: uwe_rieger.obj

The model must be at the correct scale and position relative to the Christchurch model provided, or else we will not know where to place it!  Use this small point cloud to place your proposal. All efforts will be made to place the model as indicated but OML reserve the right to curate the placement where submissions clash.

Submissions may have an accompanying texture map for your 3D mesh model. We recommend using Mudbox as a simple program for creating texture maps. Texture maps must have a resolution of 512x512 pixels and be in the JPG or PNG file format. The file shall be named with your first and last name.  For example:  uwe_rieger.jpg or uwe_rieger.png.

All the above files must be placed in a ZIP folder and sent to us at competition@cityups.co.nz. This file must be named with your first and last name. For example uwe_reiger.zip  In the email please identify all members of the team, which school or company you belong to and the contact details for any further correspondence.   containing the entrants’ contact information, including names
